What is the difference between Tutoring and Intervention? Tutoring is an excellent resource for many children who need some help catching up when either they are a bit behind, or struggle to grasp a new concept. For students with learning disabilities, or dyslexia, a researched based program systematically teaching new skills is crucial to school success!
How does Individual In-Person Intervention work? Your student meets with our reading interventionist for a one-on-one session utilizing our Science of Reading/Orton Gillingham based curriculums. Our interventionist utilizes a variety of learning modalities to support learning.
Can this be done Virtually? Virtual Individual Intervention utilizes the same curriculum and methodology as in-person tutoring, but utilizes our specialized reading intervention platform to create an engaging learning environment. Additionally, parent/student coaching strategies are provided to help ensure the student stays focused and motivated throughout the virtual intervention session! *
*While we have found virtual intervention to be effective with many students, not all students learn the most effectively in a virtual learning environment. Our director can consult with you regarding your individual students' needs..
Small Group Intervention (Small Group In-Person and Virtual intervention groups are available depending on current student enrollment): a small group of 2-3 students grouped with similar age/ability levels working together—this is a more cost-effective strategy for families, and for some students, working with a peer(s) in addition to a supportive adult can be very motivating!
What about keeping motivation up for my student and what is the time commitment?
Overcoming dyslexia and other reading disabilities/difficulties can be done, but takes a combination of a strong curriculum, taught by a strong reading interventionist, to motivate the student to push through challenges and to inspire confidence! Reading Intervention is a commitment; Reading Excellence Center works with you to create a program that is suitable to your families schedule. Our director can explain the overview of the program to you.
How common is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is common; statistics very, but show somewhere between fifteen to twenty percent of students have or display characteristics of dyslexia.
How common are reading disabilities?
13-14% of students in K-12 have a condition which requires Special Education services. Of the students who are receiving Special Education services, 85 percent of those students have a disability in reading/language processing.
Does Reading Intervention work?
The Science of Reading (SOR) is more than just phonics instruction as it taps into the research about how reading develops, and the essentials needed for skilled reading. To achieve high levels of reading comprehension it is imperative to increase student’s decoding skills and language comprehension as outlined in the SOR research, the National Reading Panel report, the simple view of reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope. The goal is to merge cognitive science research with sound instructional and pedagogical practices. This is where our curriculum comes in. Please contact us and we will explain how the program works in greater detail.
Is it too early/is my student too young?
Research studies have shown that 90% of children with reading difficulties will achieve grade level in reading if they receive help by the first grade (Vellutino et al, 1996). Early intervention minimizes the impact of dyslexia and can rewire the brain. There is a need to provide targeted early intervention to prevent reading challenges.
My student is in middle/high school…Is it too late?
Our curriculum is sensitive to the needs of older students all the way through adults! Our curriculum and method of intervention is not “childish” and will not appear that way to the older student. Research has shown our curriculum can have a significant impact on older students!

What are your experiences and qualifications?
Founder/Director Ryan Groft has a passion for working with students. He began his educational career volunteering in a neighborhood tutoring center while in high school. He then worked as a classroom aide/paraprofessional while in college. He gained teaching experience before becoming a School Psychologist for the last 18 years. Prior to starting the Reading Excellence Center, he taught graduate level School Psychology courses to aspiring School Psychologists for 6 years. Ryan has a degree in Psychology, a Masters in Education, and holds a credential in School Psychology as well as Educational Administration.
Ryan has extensive experience with identifying learning disabilities as well as working with teachers and families in supporting student achievement.
The Reading Excellence Center has a professional “Teacher of Teachers” on staff to coach and train our reading interventionist staff as well as a Behaviorist to support student motivation/learning.
Our reading interventionists have a variety of experiences ranging from public/private classroom teaching as well as small group and individual reading intervention in schools and private settings.
Is a Learning Disability (IEP) or Dyslexia diagnosis required?
No, a diagnosis is not required. Our screening will identify your student’s area(s) of weakness and our curriculum is effective for students struggling with reading, with or without a formal diagnosis.
What age of students do you work with?
We work with students ranging from Kindergarten through Middle/High School. We have recently begun to work with adults as well!
Do you do groups?
Depending on student needs/availability, we can offer groups! At times, when students work with other students at or near their age/ability level, intervention becomes more fun (and less costly).
Do you do online/virtual?
We offer virtual intervention; and found it can be as effective as in-person! We have a specialized tutoring platform that we have seen excellence results with!
What is the cost?
Cost varies, depending on services required. Our pricing is transparent and there are no long term commitments. We believe in our program. The director can break pricing down; pricing is set to be competitive and affordable.
With a Letter of Medical Necessity from a physician, a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HAS), or a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) may be used to assist in paying for intervention.
What are your locations?
We have physical locations in Fresno, Visalia, Reedley and Kingsburg. Virtual intervention is available as well.
